Our Company

The solar industry is about blazing paths where once there was nothing. It is about seeing the bigger picture, and having the innovative genius to achieve that vision.

PowerSmart was founded in 2007 on engineering principles and a 'Can Do!' attitude. We have installed over 55,000 panels in 7 countries, have won numerous awards and been featured on documentaries for our work in the Tokelau. Most importantly we have thousands of happy clients.

In 2014 alone we installed the three largest systems in New Zealand (Palmerston North Solar Farm, Tarewa Mall and Sylvia Park Mall) and we won 4 out of 9 categories at 2014 SEANZ awards. We also started the $35 million solar installation on the Northern Cook Islands and Tuvalu in partnership with the New Zealand Government through the New Zealand Aid Program.

If you are looking at solar electricity for your business or home you need to talk to us. Simply, we have more experience in solar than anyone else in New Zealand. What this means is we know what we are doing. We design systems to last and you can relax knowing that you are getting the right advice from experts in the solar electricity industry.

our history

PowerSmart  truly began much earlier than 2007 with the shared vision of the three founders in early University.  Mike, Shane, and Dean saw an opportunity to create a company based on the principles of sustainability that would empower people to take better control of their electricity costs.  For them the simple elegance of harnessing sunshine for electricity simply had to become a reality and ever since they have committed themselves to being a driving part of this change.

Mike was the reason the company came to New Zealand as he moved here immediately after University and took up a job with the ANZ Investment Bank.  Shane had visited New Zealand with Mike before and was drawn to the wonderful lifestyle and surf.  Dean is always up for an adventure and remained in Canada working in the solar industry until Mike and Shane had developed a real project for him to take on.  It took over a year of working from Shane’s living room for this to happen and during that time Shane and Mike spent plenty of time surfing.  They now look back fondly on the days when the phone didn’t ring, nothing was terribly urgent, and surfing opportunities could be harnessed at any time.
