Battery storage or battery backup is definitely the icing on the cake when it comes to solar power and the nirvana the industry has been waiting for. PowerSmart has been using batteries on off-grid solar systems since we started but their expense has prevented their widespread use in residential homes that are already connected to the grid. Over the last year this has changed due to decreasing battery costs and changes in technology. Installing a solar power system with battery storage (or hybrid solar power system) is no longer a dream but very much a reality.
How does a solar power system with battery storage work?
Solar PV panels mounted on your roof capture the energy from the sun and convert this energy into DC electricity
A solar inverter converts this DC electricity into 230V AC electricity.
The main switchboard decides where to take power from to power your home. First it takes power direct from solar inverter, second from the batteries via the battery Inverter and finallly from national grid - in that order. If excess power is generated by the solar panels that is not needed by the house this is sent first to charge the batteries via the battery inverter and secondly to the national grid if the batteries are full.
The battery inverter is two way and can take surplus electricity from the main switchboard and convert it into DC electricity to be stored in batteries or if demand requires it convert DC electricity from the battery storage into AC electricity to power your house.
