Off Grid Case Studies

Eighteen kilometers from Ruatoria and twelve kilometres away from the nearest powerlines on Whareponga Road is a six home development, that is being built by a local Maori trust to house their people. The development itself is unique in New Zealand, not because it is located in a beautiful part of the world, or being built by Maori for Maori, but because it is site of a largest Maori solar PV mini grid with battery storage in New Zealand.

The homes in the Whareponga development are all connected to a centralised off grid solar PV system, which consists of a ground mounted 15kW solar PV system which charges 133kWh of battery storage housed in a converted shipping container. Although there are many emotional reasons for living off the grid including:

  1. A love for nature
  2. Saving the planet
  3. It is what we believe in
  4. Aligns with Maori ideology

For the team at Whareponga there were also some very real economic savings to be made by having PowerSmart build an off grid solar power system for their housing development.

  1. Costs: Connecting to the grid is expensive with estimated costs of connection of over $30,000/ 1km of wiring, plus transformers. So for Whareponga costs to connect to the gird were going to be over $400,000 and even after paying all that money there would still be lines charges and paying for power. Having PowerSmart build an off grid mini grid solution has cost a fraction of connection costs and there is no ongoing powerbills for residents.
  2. Reliablity: Getting power to isolated areas is difficult but even more difficult is maintaining a steady supply. Whareponga being at the end of the electricity grid means that supply is going to be unreliable, however with their own mini grid there is no reason for their to be supply issues. Reliable power 24/7.
  3. Maintenance: Solar PV minigrids are inherently low maintenance as there are no moving parts. Essentially the only maintenance that is needed is to clean the solar panels to maintain optimum production.
  4. Rising Fuel Costs: The alternative for many remote communities is to use diesel generators, but these are inherently noisey and more importantly you have no control over the cost of diesel - both for the raw material and the cost of getting it to site. So by investing in a solar PV minigrid they have essentially fixed the costs power at today's prices.

In the end PowerSmart has helped a Maori Trust to build an off the grid solar housing development in the beautiful back blocks of East Cape. It is quiet, aligns with their beliefs and will offer significant cost savings over the life of the system. A perfect solution for all involved.
