Who buys back excess electricity?

There is no governing policy in NZ regulating the 'buy back' of electricity from micro-generators - each electricity retailer sets their own buy back policy. Meridian and Contact energy currently offer the best buy back rates.

When comparing retailers, as well as looking at their buy back rates, you should also consider their retail rates for your area.  Ultimately the best retailer for you will depend on the amount of solar power produced by your system which you can use internally within your home, and how much you are likely to be exporting back to the retailer.
