Working with PowerSmart.
Having made the decision to build his families new house on the site overlooking Mount Maunganui and the Bay of Plenty, Matthew also had to decide whether or not to connect to the national electricity grid or to go completely off grid. Having decided that a solar power off grid power system was the most cost effective and reliable system available Matthew set about researchng companies and providers in New Zealand.
But where to start. He realised that there were lots of decisions to be made and that he needed the advice and assistance of experts as to how the systems works and whether or not 'Living Off Grid' was indeed viable in New Zealand's unpredictable climate, especially in winter. Friends of his had been involved in a commercial solar power operation in Auckland and had experience working with PowerSmart. They recommended Matthew get in touch with them.
Matthew spent considerable time looking into Powersmart, researching key projects such as the Pacific Islands off grid systems they had completed and talking to people who knew of them and had worked with them. One such person was a journalist friend who had interviewed the Powersmart Managing Director MIKE BASSETT-SMITH and spoke very highly of him.
In approaching Powersmart to look at his new Home Off the Grid System Matthew points out that his only real concern was that his own home would be too small a project for Powersmart to consider building. He realised that the capabilities of Powersmart were clearly considerable, having taken complete Pacific Islands off the grid through Solar Power.
